The Art of Saddle-Stitching

Saddle-stitching is one of those crafts that survived not because it was easy, but because nothing stronger and more durable has ever been invented.

It’s a hand-sewing method that uses two needles and one continuous thread, worked through each hole from opposite sides. Every stitch is locked, every seam reinforced. If one thread breaks, the rest hold. Always.

This technique cannot be performed by any machine – only by human hands trained to keep even tension, rhythm, and symmetry. It’s exceptionally time consuming, demanding, and unforgiving – which is exactly why we do it and others don’t.

The Cost of Doing It Right

Let’s be straight:

First you draw a line, then you pierce holes along that line, then you stitch it – right hand needle, cross, pull, left hand needle, loop, cast, release. Repeat.

A single leather belt stitched at 7 SPI (stitches per inch) requires more than 630 holes, each pierced and sewn twice – 1260 passes through leather. That’s about 8 meters of thread, 10 hours of hand-sewing, and roughly 15 hours of total work with finishing.

When a belt sold for 95 EUR claims to be “saddle-stitched” and even “leather”, you can be certain it isn’t. Once you factor in cost of material and taxes, the labor cost per hour would drop below 2 EUR – a mathematical impossibility for genuine hand-sewn leather work.
